Several CCM heavyweights including prominent ministers have lost their
parliamentary seats, according to official results released yesterday.
One of the big names who beaten in Sunday’s General Election is Deputy
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional
Administration and Local Government), Aggrey Mwanri, who has lost the
Siha parliamentary seat to Dr Godwin Mollel of Chama Cha Demokrasia na
Maendeleo (Chadema).
Announcing the results, the Returning Officer, Rashid Kitambulio said
that Dr Mollel scooped 22, 746 votes against Mwanri’s 18, 584 of the
total votes. Mwanri served as the MP for Siha constituency since 2000.
The deputy Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Eng Christopher
Chiza was also floored by Chadema’s Bilago Samson who garnered 23, 041
votes. Eng Chiza managed 22, 954 votes.
The Returning Officer, Jaina Msangi announced Samson as the new MP for
Buyungu constituency in Kigoma Region. Eng Chiza was seeking a third
term re-election as Buyungu Member of Parliament after serving the
constituency for ten years since 2005.
It was also unfortunate for the Health and Social Welfare deputy
Minister, Dr Steven Kebwe who lost the Serengeti parliamentary seat to
Marwa Ryoba (Chadema). Dr Kebwe was defending the seat for the second
time after representing the residents for five years from 2010.
Esther Bulaya (Chadema) was announced the winner of the parliamentary
seat for Bunda Urban constituency after defeating the Agriculture
Minister, Steven Wasira. The outgoing minister has been an MP for the
constituency since 2005.
He previously served as the Minister of Water, Minister in the Prime
Minister's Office for Regional Administration and Local Government and
Minister of State in the President's Office (Social Relations and
Coordination).
In Mwanga constituency, Chadema’s Henry Kileo won against the Water and
Irrigation Minister, Prof Jumanne Maghembe with a difference of 15 votes
only.
Prof Maghembe also served as the minister in different ministries
including the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Minister of
Labour, Employment and Youth Development. He become MP for Mwanga
constituency in 2000.
In Tarime Urban Constituency, Ester Matiko (Chadema) scooped 20, 017
votes against his opponents Michael Kembaki (CCM) who got 14, 025 votes
and Deogratias Meck (ACT-Wazalendo) with 356 votes.
Tanzania has a total voter population of 22.7 million who were
registered through the Biometric Voter Register (BVR). This year’s
General Election was the first time to employ the electronic system
through the use of voter identification kits.
The last Sunday’s elections were the fifth since the restoration of the
multiparty system in 1992. Voters elected the president, legislators and
councilors.
